right how the f**k do you remove them when you cant remove the inspection plate (its one of the older ones)

is it just a case of finding a narrow 10mm socket? i cant get enough purchase on mine!

or is there a special trick?!?!

yeah i have the same style back plate. i think i just used an extension bar with a wobbly end, you know that gives you as bit of play and a shallow socket on a 3/8 drive.

I'm with Joe's method for getting them off.  Those two buggers took me ages.

When putting them back in I used a piece of rubber hosing instead of the socket to get them back in loosely (much better feel on whether they were cross threading) before getting the rest back in, then tightened them all up.

Enjoy!

The couple of times I've done it I've used a 1/4" springy extension bar with a really slim 10mm socket on the end.
Getting them out is easy but as mentioned about getting them back in without cross-threading can be a bit taxing. I like the rubber hose idea though Mart, I've always just persevered with the springy bar.

You got any pics of your dad's split ?

just need to find a springy extension then & a narrow socket!

rang VAG for a price on a sump gasket - £18 + VAT!!! 3x price compared to Euro & GSF

saying that the last GSF was like a piece of paper!

Def go VAG on the gasket.  Made the mistake once on the GSF one.  Never again!

for that price you might as well get a windage tray with combined gasket!
