6BTDC timing mark...
« on: 27 March 2007, 18:10 »
What do I line this up to when timing a valver?

Is it the obvious "pointy" bit where the green plug screws into??

Cheers

well I've just timed it to what I thought - the dizzy is basically in the same place that it was before timing it!!

So I must have managed to get it just about right without a timing light!

At least I now know what it is set to though!!!

This is basically what I done if anyone wants to put it into a how to - after confirming what I have doen is correct of course!!!

  • Engine up to operating temp (fan kicks in, oil temp above 800C
  • Switch off.
  • Unscrew green plug on top of gearbox.
  • Mark your 6BTDC with tippex make it easier to see! You may need to turn engine so that you can see your marks. I put it into fourth gear and pushed or pulled car slowly until I could see the marks!

  • Disconnect red connector at coil.
  • Loosen dizzy bolts, so that it moves but not so that it spins!
  • Connect timing light as per instructions.
  • Start engine.
  • Point timing light into the gearbox "hole".
  • you should see the marks - if you're timing is anywhere near!
  • Move the dizzy until you can see the marks.
  • Carefully adjust the dizzy until you get the big 6BTDC mark lined up with the mark on the gearbox housing.
  • Swith off.
  • Tighten Dizzy Bolts.
  • Have a final check if you want!
  • Re-connect red lead under coil.
  • Take it for a spin!!!

I had to adjust the idle slightly while seeting the timing.
You will probably now need to check the CO setting.

Don't know if this is of any use or not - if not I've just wasted my time!

I don´t have those timing marks on my 8V, although that was what I was looking for. Can´t find anything resembling them either apart from a bigger groove which I timed it up to, but it ran ´orribly. I´m still stuck. Any ideas??????????? Rubjonny perhaps?

have you turned the engine over completly, it may be that someone fitted the flywheel wrong!  Does it have the smaller punch mark visible just to the right of the big red arrow, if so then the flywheel has been replaced but the muppet didn't put a BTDC mark on it beforehand!

Some posh timing lights have an advance/retard wheel on them, this will allow you to use the TDC punch mark to set the engine to 6 degrees BTDC :)

I´ll have another look for said timing marks. If I can´t find them, I´ll have to draw them in myself.
Funny you should mention the timing light. I have just bought a Gunsens one when I was in the UK last week with the retard wheel on it.

i'm pretty sure due to the stud placing the flywheel can only go on in one position for this very reason?

perhaps if the stud is still there, maybe non VW flys dont etc.  I've never tried to purposly fit the flywheel on the wrong way though

I do know that on my 2e bottom end the crank pulley could go on any way you like, the crank had a key, but the pulley had 4 holes!  Its the only time I've seen that on 4 different engines though, I must have got lucky

sorry i mean the gearbox end, the pattern of the holes can only mean the blots can go in one way? at least its like that on a few 8v's i've worked on, a 9a and a g60. they all have bolt holes that will only allow the clutch/flywheel to attach to the crank in one way.

Yeah I was just saying the pulley on mine could go on any way, so assumed fly would be the same!

The bolt pattern of the pressure plate will definitly only go on 1 way, and I have seen the studs on the rear of the fly too. I just wasn't sure if they would only allow it to fit on the pressure plate 1 way, or if they were just there to help locate it centrally while you fit the bolts...

Regardless, if you can see the TDC punch mark on the fly but not the BTDC, the problem is that a new fly was fitted and no BTDC mark was made :)
