Losing memory all of a sudden
« on: 11 March 2007, 19:37 »
I recently had my headunit nicked from my Golf, just got a new one but it no longer keeps its memory when the ignition is turned off and turned back on again. I've tested the permanent live and the ignition switched 12v wires to the headunit and both of these seem to work fine. Are there any other wires that could have been damaged when the old one was nicked that could cause this to happen? Thanks

You may have a break in the permanent live or you could try swapping the two lives or join them both together and run the permanent live from them.

yeah swapping them round (the red and yellow) is normally the way to go in golfs. joining together will also work ( there is normally a connector attached to the HU loom that allows you to do this) but then you will be able to leave your stereo on when the car is not, so beware!

When your previous head unit was nicked did they take the loom with it (the Blaupunkt loom) leaving you with the ISO plugs to plug your new Blaupunkt loom into? Or, did they just take the and leave all the wires?

If you have a switched live and a permanent live at the SIO connector block, the chances are excellent that your switched and permanent lives are muddled, as Uruk at Tommk3cab have suggested.

You can swap them over mid-loom (the Blaupunkt loom). Presumably If you have checked you have switched and permanent lives, you have a multimeter or similar. Connect the look up and check that red is receiving switched live and yellow is permanent, as this is the right set up.

thanks for your reply, I never had to have any other connectors, the original connectors went straight into the old radio and it worked fine - no memory loss. I've checked the permanent live and switched with a multimeter and they go to the correct pins on the back of the unit as it says in the Blaupunkt manual.. any other ideas?

there isnt much you can do except connecting them together, it wont hurt unless you forget to take the face off the stereo ( assuming you can!) even then it would probably be ok for quiet a while as long as the car is regularly used and you didnt actually leave the stereo playing music. another possibility is running a live wire direct from battery and having a switch put in it,  i had to do this in my renault for my amps to switch on.
