Rough accel, 5000rpm limit
« on: 28 November 2006, 17:37 »
Recently acquired 1995 2.0 8V with 85K eng code ADY.  Noticed that hesitant @ 2000-3000rpm and rev limiter cut in at 5000rpm.  Followed threads looking at all the problems that cause it and had local mechanic check timing and was told it was fine.  Recently took to crypton tuner and had diagnostics & found fault code hall sender out of range and dizzy was incorrectly set and about 6 deg out.  This cleared fault codes and now revs to red line but is still hesitant on acceleration esp below 3000 rpm.  Any ideas also now won't idle when first started and cold.  Cleaned throttle body and now it will idle after running for 2-3 mins whereas before took about 20 mins to settle.  Can hear a repeated clicking and low pitch whine from around throttle body area for about min after switching off ??relay problem.  The idling problem started recently whereas the rough acceleration has been there a while but has been exaggerated by correcting the timing - where should I start.
Thanks

try disconnecting your maf sensor (next to airbox) and see if that makes a difference. If it's fine after that you need a new one. Just unplug the electrical connection.

Yea that ^^^

Plus this rough acceleration does it go away once the revs rise?

If so then change the ECU relay.

the relays are ALWAYS worth the £30 as they'll go eventually anyway.

I have exactly the same engine and exactly the same fault codes and exactly the same running problems!

I clear the codes wi vag-com, run it, nothing shows up. I did the timing as per haynes basic settings and cleaned the throttle body, but you have to do a TB realignment with vag-com to reset the TPS. (throttle position sensor) - its easy but needs the kit obviously.

The clicking is the TPS trying to find idle position. I sprayed mine wi wd40 after removing and super-cleaning the tb. The cutting out stopped. I did the TB alignment and it stopped hunting and starts easier, quite good when warm.

Now im left wi stuttering power when warmed up and it needs a bit of throttle to catch when cold but after a few blips its ok and pulls like a train when cold and steady. Its really bloody quick when its below 50o oil temp on the MFA.

I think the hall sender in the dizzy is on its way out, so might take a dizzy from a scrappies, passat are common and good for ady parts, scrappies hear "gti" and go "ahem! Expensive!" - on the other hand - "passat? Whassat?" much cheapness.
