Identifying 16v mk3 cars online
« on: 16 February 2007, 21:07 »
Hi all,

Am looking to buy a mk3 16v gti, based in Ireland, but will import as there is much more available in UK, only problem is ther seem to be different pictures of engines in various ads

I saw one nice 16v Anniversary advertised but it's engine looks different to the other 16v engine pics I have seen

Here is the engine in the Anniversary I looked at

and here is what I thought they looked like

Is he trying to pass his 8v off as a 16 or are tehre different 16v engines

Also.. are all 16v's badged as such on the car, or are some badged just plain 'ol gti...

The money is burning a hole in my pocket, but I don't want to get burned myself

Thanks for any and all help.....

Top pic is the 8v & looks like the AGG 115bhp
Bottom is the 16v ABF 150bhp

The 16v is the one to get  it has a hydraulic clutch, EDL traction control  ( its automatic, cuts out over 25mph) and alot of the running gear is from the VR6.

If you are unsure what donk an online car has, ask the owner to open the boot and tell you what letters/numbers are on the white sticker under the carpet, where it says 'eng code' on it   2E, ADY, AGG, ABF etc...if the sticker is not there...let it go, in my experience it means the car has had a crash/repaint in the back.
