URGENT - Serious Misfire
« on: 14 February 2007, 21:34 »
Had Tappets and Cam Belt changed (Central VW Audi in ellesmereport) and since then nothing but problems.

Rough Idle (more than likely idle valve) but now it cuts out at lights, when turning (for instance T Junction) and now when bimbling down motorway (60mph). It will do this at any speed and drops 1,000rpm at any time.

Help (before i sell the car because of it)

Thats what i am thinking, but how could they have knocked it out?

Should i force the issue with the garage?

It ran fantastic till they worked on it, not it "rattles" (tappets not set properly?) you can hear the cam belt hitting something and now it has rough idle and very bad misfire.

How can i set timing by eye before it goes back to garage?

Not being funny but if ever a garage does any work on my cars (not that I trust them to), if it's running worse than when it went in they have it thrown back at them.

Your problem could have started at the last cam belt change. If the chap or garage that did it got the position wrong on the intermediate pulley, this can be rectified, although the lazy way, by just adjusting the distributor to achieve the correct ignition timing. Then when the next time the cam belt is changed, all the marks are put how they should be, then the ignition timing is thrown out again. Although this should have been picked up on the subsequent road test, the garage could argue that it is not their fault and therefore charge you extra to put right a fault that was already there.
Check the marks on your crankshaft pulley and the intermediete pulley. If they are as per the book, then remove the distributor cap and see which way the rotor arm is pointed. It should be pointed to an indented line on the dizzy body, (if memory serves me well). If it doesn't, then theres your problem.
Next check the cam pully position to see if it is out by more then a tooth, although it would have to be out considerably to make the engine mis-fire.
Hope this helps when you talk to the garage.

Well got the car to the garage.

And they are saying that its my fault.

According to them: Wrong Plugs (knackered even thou less than 12 months old) Wrong Leads (less than 12 months old) Wrong Coil (standard VW Fit) Knackered Rotor and Cap.

I am saying they are all knackered due to them cocking up to begin with.

It went in running fine, they did the work and "broke" it, breaking down at 60mph on a peak time motorway with a truck behind you is never fun!

Picking the car up later and will see what excuse they come up with for why everything was fine before they worked on it and why it all went pear shaped within a week of them working on it.

Even he said he didnt know why it all went wrong, but is still saying its nothing to do with them.

I was going to put more work their way, now however I have to find a garage that knows what they are doing and dont blame me for when THEY get it wrong.

And its www.centralvwaudi.com
