Help, is my car dead?
« on: 06 February 2007, 20:21 »
Hi,

Just thought I would post this as am looking for some advice on whether I have possibly killed my car this morning? To provide a bit of background, I set off to work in my 92 8v GTI this morning as usual. After about 10mins I joined a dual carriageway and sped up to cruising speed (70mph honest). After about 2 mins the oil light started to flash on the dashboard. I immediately pulled over and checked the oil levels etc of the car as I had to add some oil the other day. Oil level looked fine but it looked like there was a bit of water in the oil (there was greyish stuff on the inside of the oil filler cap). I therefore decided to limp home as I was not too far from my house and the oil light had stopped flashing. After crawling home at a very low speed and noticing that the the car was sounding very tappety I parked up the car in the driveway. I checked the oil level again and it looked OK although the there was a slight smell of burnt oil and I could still see a bit of greyish colour on the inside of oil filler cap.

Obviously I am no mechanic but with my limited knowledge of cars it looks like I might have blown the head gasket on my car (even though there has been no prior overheating or running problems). Does this sound like a reasonable assumption and if so how much am I looking at to repair it (bearing in mind I do not have the mechanical skills to do it myself)?  I had thought it would be about £200 depending on if I need to get the head skimmed or not.

Cheers,

Peter

You have probably got away with it, but it does sound as if you have a blown head gasket. Investigate further before using the car and change the oil.
If and when you take the head off, check for any burning or damage on your valve gear and tappets.

Mayo on the cap is normally fine, but mayo on the dipstick is more serious.
Start by replacing the oil pressure senders, but if you have low oil pressure you would have heard the warning buzzer as well!
