Engine speed sensor?
« on: 01 February 2007, 17:00 »
Does anybody know where the "Engine speed sensor" is fitted on a MK3 16v ABF engine?  I've looked to the right of the oil filter, but I can't seem to find it.
With pics if poss.
Thanks

Look at posts for boneybradley or rubjonny, they have on a pic of the engine and show where all the sensors are located
Virtually everything I know about the workings of the internal combustion engine can be written on the back of a small stamp with a large marker

Those pics are for a 8V, I need pics for a 16v. Do you need to drain the sump to change the sensor?

I don't think you need to drain the sump, but to get decent access you might have to drop the engine mount, although some people manage.

It's located next to the oil filter housing at the bottom front of the block.

So am I right in saying that I have to remove the oil filter to see it and remove the engine bracket to get better access?

I haven't done the job myself, but my mech friend and main dealer who did the job did not mention anything about taking off filter, otherwise they would have charged for me new filter and oil. So, based on that you should be able to get access to it without having to drain oil/remove filter.

Hi

Support the engine, remove the front engine mount....its behind that....in the bottom of the block
next to and behind the oil filter. Look down at your dipstick the lead that runs next to that goes to the sensor.

Once the sensor is loose, will there be oil leaking everywhere?

You should be fine if your quick swapping old with new and the engine is cold...get stuck in mate

Cheers guys for the advice, I attacked the sensor today. What a tw*t of a job it turned out to be. A 1 hour job turned out to be a 4 hour job.
Here are the following steps:-

1. Disconnect the battery
2. Jack up the passenger side and support it on axle stand.
3. Remove the undertray and jack up the engine so that its just being supported.
4. Remove the front engine mount bracket and remove the starter motor.
5. Remove the oil filter
6. Unplug the sensor and by using a 5mm allen key unscrew the bolt on the sensor and pull sensor back slowly, otherwise it could snap in half. (That happened to me).
( If its snaps, you have 2 options. remove the radiator and slam panel, or drop the sump to get it out.)
7. Clean the hole out for dirt and grit.
8. Fit the new sensor and do the above in reverse order.

Hope these steps help you guys, my old sensor had some insulation missing around the sensor so it was arcing on the engine mount bracket which was causing the misfire.

So I now have a spare Coil, ECU and Fuel pump relay, dizzy cap, rotor arm and leads. Any takers?
