Worrying steering
« on: 01 February 2007, 12:32 »
Have just had new anti-roll bar bushes fitted. When car came back (1990 8v GTI) steering wheel was very slightly out of line (am really anal about this!). More importantly, the car feels very vague when driving at speed in a streight line - almost like torque-steer (ie feel I'm fighting with the wheel).

Any ideas? Might it be worn ball-joints? Any ideas? I've owned the car for 8 years, so know that its not right.

Sounds like they have returned the car to you without checking the front wheel alignment after changing the bushes. Take it some where that will be able to setup camber and toe angles as well as just the tracking. Your local VW dealer can do this, although their labour charge will be more than a local specialist.

... it's turned into a fashion show for poofters.

PSI tuning in Stoke on Trent, if you're in the area, they're really good at 4-wheel alignment, inc castor/cambor. Or, Demon Tweeks in Wrexham are also good - but charge a fortune.
They're called Demon Theives for a reason!

Find out what they unbolted to change the bushes, and get them to put it back together properly!

Just a thought, before you go back, check your tire pressures, could be that simple!
