has this Q been asked....?
« on: 26 January 2007, 10:07 »
if so then sorry! Just asking what flavours the MK4 GTI's come in?

Being new to VW, thought i'd go test the 2.0 GTI thinking being 2ltr should be quite pokey. Boy was i wrong!!! definately not a drivers car - i was expecting some zip but there was nothing whatsoever!

So i randomly started looking at 1.8's and noticed they came in a few different variants but no real definative breakdown on the mk4 specs since launch.  All i know is this: there is a 1.8 Turbo and a 1.8 20v and that ones 150bhp and the other is 180bhp. Is this right ?? i havent a clue which is which.

Are there more, of so can some1 list them... or maybe someone knows a link that will point me in the right direction.

all help appreciated! taa. Geoff.

hi mate, they are both 1.8 20v t's, its just the turbo and mapping that differs. the 180 is fitted to the anniversary gti only and also into the bora after 2003. the 150 is in  the normal gti, both units can be chipped to over 200bhp for around 400 quid but i am not sure what this does for the life span of the engine.  :undecided: also the 180 comes with a 6 speed box!  And before the turbo unit they made the 2.0 and the non turbo 1.8 20v but tbh i wouldnt touch those if your after having a rapid gti, there just golf's with the sports seats! get a 20v t, the 180 is a rapid unit!  (from driving a bora 180... i would say the golf version maybe a little quicker??  :undecided:)

All the 1.8's are 20v and the vast majority are turbo charged.

Within the turbo'd ones there are a few different engine varients depending on age, again most are 150bhp (and certaibnly none are less than 150 bhp) but some are drive by wire, have variable valve timing, 'sportier' turbo's etc - little tweaks that were applied as time went on.

cant remember all the varients off hand but from late 2000 onwards till about 3003??! the 150bhp engine was the AUM with VVT, DBW and a sportier turbo.  Then there is the 180bhp anniverary edition, but this became the standard engine on the newest 'standard' GTIs.

AUQ engine perhaps?

There are far more knowledgable people than I about so no doubt they will help. Basically don't buy a GTI unless its a turbo, you can't really go wrong with any of them, but the newer engines are a little bit more tunable due to the bigger turbo etc but if you can afford it a 180bhp version would be the best.

Bet you wish you hadn't asked!

Guide to the diferent turbo variants >>> http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=40194.msg322785#msg322785

Also, remember you can pick up the 180 turbo's in the cheaper 'non-anniversary' form!

The other GTi's are the:-

1.8 20v N/A (125 bhp) & the 2.0 8v (115 bhp).

IMO, I would def go for one of the turbos, as I even found the 150 under-powered.
Current Car:- 2014 GTI PP manual, white.
