Steering/Suspension Problem - Need Ideas
« on: 25 January 2007, 20:29 »
Hi guys, ive got a couple of probs with my 88 MK2 8v which i need some ideas of what it could be.

1. With passengers in the back there is a knocking sound from the nearside rear suspension when going over bumps, was thinking knackered shocks? top mounts? car is on standard shocks and springs.

2. Very slight grinding/whining noise from steering when on full lock to the left, only one side. sounds as if inside the car ie. under the rack somewhere rather than under the bonnet or suspension related. Any ideas?

Thanks, appreciate any advice.

Pete

Hey m8

Your slight grinding/whining noise could be PAS pump/fluid level? Worth checking the levels before pulling stuff apart.

If you suspect top mounts in the rear, good way to check is, take off the top mount covers (if any) and give the back a few good bounces keeping an eye out for travel of the black rubber bit, it shouldn't lift. Also check to make sure the shocks stop the bounce almost immediately, if the back continues to bounce then shocks definitely need sorting!

Good luck

Knocking is most likely exhaust hitting the beam....  Have a look at the underside of the bend in the pipe where it crosses the beam and if there are any marks you will need to adjust the exhaust slightly.

Had the same problem when I dropped my last Mk2 by 25mm- tinkering and trial and error sorted it!

The knocking could well be knackered rear axle bushes....bit of a pain to replace, but not as tricky as on MK3s.....

Just had a thought regarding the grinding noise from the front. Could be wheel bearings?

I had it turning right corners, was the left wheel bearing! felt a sltight rumble/grinding through the car and steering.

Jack the car up on each side and hold  wheel at  12 and 6 o'clock position and check for slackness,  repeat on 3 and 9 o'clock position,  this will give U a good indicator if its the wheel bearing or not,  also check to ensure UR CV boots are intact,  maybe dry or worn Cv joint,  easiest way of checking this is to turn the steering full lock Clockwise and turn the car 360,  repeat for CCW,  if you hear clicking grinding maybe Cv is shafted?

If it is a 90 mph per hour wind and you drive your car at 90mph downwind, if you stick your head outside would you feel the wind?
