Mobil 1 0/40 Ok In Golf GTi Mk3?

Hello,
Just wanted to check whether you can use Mobil 1 0/40 oil in a Golf GTi 2.0 (8v) 97. Volkswagen say its too thin to use and I should use semi synthetic 10/40

Whats the correct answer?
