Problems with MK4 GTI Gearbox
« on: 18 December 2006, 21:34 »
Hello,

I have a 1.8T Gti Mk4 on an 02 plate, 58k on clock.  The problem I have is that sometimes I just cant find the gears.  It just refuses to go into any gears first time.  This problem is made worse when cold and gets better when the engine is warm.  I have not got a clue what is wrong with the car so any help would be much welcomed.

Cheers
matt

Might be the linkage or bushes or a focked box but i doubt it. might be worth changing the gear box oil.

Check that your clutch is operating correctly - there might be some air in the hydrauic system.

My 1.8T also has a problem but mine is only on 1st gear. Most of the time it won't select 1st unless you go to 2nd first then straight into 1st. All others are perfect. I think they have problems with the linkage on the gearbox becoming 'dry' but I've given mine a good soaking with WD40 to no avail :undecided:

Has anyone had the gearbox changed? How much was the cost?
I'm thinking of removing mine and stripping it down as I think the Syncro has gone on 1st gear. My mate is fairly knowledgable and has a car lifter. Anyone attempted this before? Any info about all of this would be great. Cheers. Its a 1.8T engine (AGU) and gearbox (ECW).
