To anyone who is thinking on splashing out on getting an ipod kit installed, and in my case already has 6 disc changer and factory fit sat nav, then the best way is to purchace an ITRIP from ebay, various makers, i went for a kensington pico fm unit, that works on fm frequency, u put in a free fm frequency like 94.7mhz, plug this wireless device into the bottom of my ipod nano and bobs your uncle, fannys your aunt, works brilliantly, next to no static noise, same as a cd in quality of sound, ands all for a bargain £30 !!!!!, dam site cheaper then usb plug in kit
Only downside is that particular unit doesnt charge your ipod, but you can buy itrips that do, ive heard these units are trying to be band in various EU countrys, so get one whilst you can!

I brought one of these when I was in Canada during the summer;

It works like an itrip, but charges the ipod too.

Worked very well in the middle of the Canadian rockies, however not so good in West London with all the pirate radio stations and interference.

Hence I ditched it and when I bought my new GTI in Sept and I got one with the ipod connection in the armrest.

agreed mate, if your in capital of london , you would be constantly adjusting it, but if you live outa a main capital, ie ,birmingham, london, glasgow,manchester, then its worth its money, i live in southampton and it works a treat. Remember its only £20 to £30's worth so u get what you pay for, i only suggested it cus vw will charge you at least £150 or more for fitting a usb one. its an option if you already have a fully spec'd gti as i do already and dont want to loose either sat nav or multichanger.

I've had a few of the non-iPod transmitters, from a Belkin bought in the US to a knockoff from China, via eBay.  They've all been reasonable but none of them last particularly well and trust me, here in Glasgow, you need to retune regularly too.  The Belkin was particularly crap, dieing one day last summer after being left in a hot car.

For my GTi, I bought the mp3 connector mentioned here, fitted it in an hour (using the phone kit info above) and am well pleased; much less hassle, no bu99ering about with batteries etc and far better sound quality.  Do yourself a favour and get one.  £46 including p&p.
