MK1 Golf GTI Front wings
« on: 30 December 2006, 16:11 »
I'm new to the VW scene although I've been in the VAG shows for a few years with my SEAT Ibiza Cupra.  I only purchased my '83 1.8 MK1 GTI yesterday and am very happy with it.  First job for January is to get it resprayed and generally tidied up ready or a show or two.

My drivers side front win could do with replacing and I was wondering whether it's a bolt off - bolt on job or if they're welded?

Any help would be great!!!

Cheers

Hi

They are bolt on wings, open the bonnet, loosen all the bolts, under the car wheel off, undo the bolt that holds the leading lower edge to the front pannel.  Now the smelly bit, get a hot air gun and heat the back of the wheel arch against door hinges, I think there are 4 bolts here, evenly spaced, but it takes time to find them, and to get the socket onto them.  Last bolt is just under the sill, level with the door hinges.
Then undo the loose bolts and carry on heating the all the mounting points, 'cos VW loved there body seal and it will wreck the wing if you don't get it hot enough.
All the bolts have a steep thread and a 10mm head, don't loose them!
Take the moulding trim of carefully, as they arn't too common!

Hope this helps

Cheers

Hopefully I'll be able to get the wings and switch them without too much bother
