Been offered a MK1
« on: 22 November 2006, 10:45 »
Advice need please guys.

I've been offered a MK1 GTi, and I would like some opionions on whether it's worth buying or not. Spec is :

1983/Y 1.8
Llhasa Green
170(ish)k miles with original svc book
4 owners from new
Body work is pretty good on the surface (not been underneath)
No s/roof
All original (I think)

Requires:

tailgate (rust)
rust repair to n/s/r quarter, and a small dent/surface rust on the roof
front spoiler
driver's seat
driver's door mirror
clutch

Any help on approximate value would be great, and is it economical to repair ? Not sure what I'll have to give for it yet, but won't be alot, as it came in p/ex at a garage next door to mine.

Cheers peeps

Guy

You really need to chech underneath, round the chassis legs, rear subframe mounts etc... pretty much anything else can be replaced repaired or upgraded quite cheaply but if the chassis is rotten its a lost cause, you'll spend as much sorting it as you would on a car with a decent chassis in the 1st place

yea, indeed, check for rot on the jacking points, fuel filler cap and filler tube, inside front arches (check the bit highest up at the back near the bulkhead if you can) if theres little rot you got a bargin
