2.0 ltr 8 v cuts out on idle

  my black 5 door 97model 8v just wont idle period esspesially when its cold. i thought maybee the throtttle cable was buggered as i notice the throttle snaps closed at idle .i dont mean just a bit  i mean it hits the stopper on the throttle linkage as if the car is off. i tried adjusting the cable by turning it up on the threads but all this achieved was stripping the threads off when i nailed the accelerator. golf nuts told me i need a new head in the air mass sensor but that would cost ?800. any suggestions are welcome

Is the throttle stop set properly? i think your car has a potentiometer. The throttle stop will probably be adjustable.
