Wipers

Hi,

Well, managed to lay my hands on a mint (bodywork wise) 94 8v GTI 5 door in dark red (indian red I think). Bought it for my girlfriend as a little project car but compared to my vectra sri (yeah yeah I know but its a brilliant motorway car ) its a bloody hoot to drive!

Anyway, I digress, it has a few electrical issues (passenger windows/ sunroof twisting up and fan only blowing on 2 and 3) but the most important is the wipers. They'll only work on fast and you have to catch it on the switch when they get to the bottom to stop them rather than just switching them off and they resetting themselves. Is it a simple case of changing the switch/stalk or is it more complicated. The stalks I've seen on ebay come with a ring too, would I need to take the steering wheel off to replace it all?

Help and advice much appreciated. Hope to be posting more as I get the technical issues sorted and start on the fun bits!

Cheers

Bigun

hi bigun,

sounds like your wiper relay is on its way out, give your local vw stealers a call for a price, expect £15ish. dont have details of relay at hand, but dealer will know.

Yeah could be the wiper relay...but the stalk's are prone to failing (normally after a bit of smoke)and the one for the wiper also has the mfa and the hazard's on which does mean the wheel has to come off for fitting..

regarding the heater, you need a heater fan resistor and the fan should have all 4 setting's back costing between £20-30, The sunroof motor again is a bit unreliable and should cost about 15-25 quid from ebay and the window motor's also fail (normally leaving the window jammed up or fully down) and if you do need to change this and it is jammed in the up position you will need to convince this to go fully down as this need's threading out of the bottom of the door

Thanks.

Will check out the relay today, sounds like it could be that. If not, I'll start on a process of elimination!

As regards the windows and sunroof, front pass window is stuck up....not too much of an issue as it stops her smoking in the car when I'm driving! One of those niggly little things I'd like to sort tho. Any tips on getting the window down? I've checked the switch etc and feeds to the motor with a multi meter and all seems ok so I'm convinced its just the motor. Can I change just the motor without removing loads of stuff?

Sunroof - motor is fine. A quick look shows that a clip or bracket on the left hand side has broken so won't grab whatever it needs to. Conversely the other side works so it twists in the mounting. Not so much of a panic being winter but its trial and error to get it closed properly (manually and with my fingers!) to make sure it doesn't leak!

Will keep you posted on the wiper situation.

Thanks

Bigun.
