Floorpan holes!!!!!
« on: 01 November 2006, 00:26 »
hi guys,

bad news for me tonight, i was cleaning up the floorpan so i could lay some new sound deadening tommorow, and the floorpan has rotten a little. there we're two holes, i bashed all the rotten metal out back to the decent stuff so it could be angle grinded back and welded to allow a new piece of sheet metal to go in place.

ive read lots of horror stories about floorpans, and i dont want to have to scrap the car because of this, is it safe to just weld back up? in a couple of weeks im going to ramp the car, pressure wash the under carriage, and seal it all up with some underbody sealant.

the rest of the floorpan seems top notch, i did a quick knock test with the butt of the hammer, so hopefully this is just localised.

Your floor is best welded from the underneath, and the plate must be welded all the way round, and not tacked (MOT regs)
Or, heres what I would do though.. make the 2 rust holes into 1 rectangular hole so that all the rust is gone, hold a steel plate underneath, and "scribe" through the top of the hole, cut your scribed plate to size, and carefully "butt weld" the plate into place.. lightly grind the underside to tidy the weld, clean off surrounding areas, and re underseal immeadiatly
Inside can be finished with a couple of light coats of grey primer.. dead neat, and NO water traps!

If its just this spot then id repair it like described and not worry about it. When under body sealing i would not bother jet washing it 1st. This may create more problems! Simply slap the stuff on good and thick pushing it into every nook and cranny! Prepare to get covered in the stuff too!

Personally I would plate the hole and then attack any further rust you may be able to see with a wire wheel. Undercoat the entire lot with a decent rust encapsulator like Eastwood or POR15, and the underseal this.  If you go sticking a load of underseal straight over the area without being sure that you have removed all the rust, you will just compound the problem because none of the moisture/dirt which has caused the rust in the first place will be able to escape or dry.
