9a 2.0 16v into mk1 golf

I bought a mk1 a while back and have just replaced the knackered 9a 2.0 16v engine for a reconditioned unit, thing is i also discovered that whoever had it before has cut the bottom off the airbox to make it fit under the hood. The car runs sweet when its warm but the idle tickover is terrible when its cold. Can i just replace the airbox or would i have to move it somewhere else? Any ideas would be welcomed. It wont be anything to do with the airbox I don't think, though you could try to seal it up if you like.

Is it fitted with an ISV or Air Aux Valve?
