Fix or break?
« on: 22 October 2006, 20:12 »
Right- decision time.  Winter is here so now time to look at the MOT failure sitting in my garage.

Main area of concern is bulkhead corrosion behind the exhaust manifold under the brake pipes.  I'm no expert on the old welding front, but a mate has suggested stripping out the dash and doing it from inside to make life easier.

Also failed on the NSR hose ferrule and OSF hose ferrule, as well as the emissions.  Not bothered about those, though, as can sort that out easily enough.

Other than that car is pretty good, all receipts from new, new suspension all round, masses done in last 2 yrs (clutch, seats re-bolstered, water / oil pump, rear caliper etc), and 130k on original engine.

Thing is, if I break it can I get the shell taken away by Mr Scraps?  Will he take it without wheels etc?!

Have a few days this week so need to take some action......  Any advice welcome!

TBH... I'm in the same boat as you!!

Mine has just failed its mot on a number of things one being rust under body kit which is about 12" square... I've had it patched and when i can afford it, having it done properly: respray etc.

I could go and buy another one but i know the car....

Up to you mate,i'd do the work.

Good luck whatever you decide!

i'd defo fix it mate any mk2 is worth keeping within reason.
as for the scrap man they prefer it with no wheels cos they
get less for it due to problems gettin rid of rubber.

Mart, if you do break it then yes Mr Scrapy will take away shell with no wheels etc, most have a truck with a grab arm on.

Thanks for the advice!

Breaking now seems like a more likely option, having discovered that the minor patch of surface rust is now a channel for water through the bottom of the windscreen......  A*se!!!!

Have got dash out to inspect bulkhead, now just need to remove all the heater etc.  Fun..........
