dropping the old girl
« on: 30 September 2006, 10:43 »
No i don't mean dumping the missus!!!!
Right i must admit to having confused myself a little. The original plan was to get koni coilovers (no im not rich just have a new credit card). To go with the 205-40-17 rims that are also going on the card. But reading through past threads it seems that the coilovers are particularly harsh on normal road use and with a big drop the arches need doing cos of rubbing etc. So is the best route to go eibach springs and koni/eibach shocks or something similar and will the 30mm drop the eibach springs (should it be the pro kit or the sport line) give be enough for the alloys to fill the rims?
Has anyone used this set up or got any pics of similar?
Its to go on 16v gti by the way

Cheers

it all depends on what you're willing to sacrifice.

i'm on eibachs and standard shocks cos i live in sheffield which is speedbump city and has THE worst roads in europe.

if you just want low ,but don't care about your spine or fillings, coilovers are best from what i've read on here.

eibach springs with koni shocks seem to be the choice setup tho'.

Cheers m8. i also live where the roads are more like gravel tracks and we have many many speed bumps the really small annoying ones 3 in a row . Because i use the car every day its not practcal to lose all ride quality. So its mainly for looks, really just to make the wheels fill the archs cos the 17s will obviously sit the car alot higher. The only thing with the eibach springs is they are only 35mm drop and by the time ive put the wheels on even though the tyres are lower profile im worried it won't actually look any lower!

17's with 40's wont change the height of the car! It keeps the same rolling radius as standard.

If you have lots of speed humps then a 25 mm drop maybe wise!

Spax do some good kits. Check out Larkspeed they are quite reaonable.

rolling radius? so 15-55-195 are the same as 17-40-205? so the speedo would read correct as well. i avoid humpy roads anyway its just the potholes that cause problems, so the 35mm drop should be ok with any luck anyone got a pick of a mk3 on 35mm drop with 17s?

Yes that why you go down a ratio aspect to keep rolling radius the same so speedo is correct.

yup, what Len said.

you should be on 205/50/15 as standard tho' , not 195/55/15.

have a look in the "show us yer mk3 thread at the top of this section for picks , there are a few lowered on 17's in there.

yip your rite 195-55-15 is what is on my 8v, doh. so theoretically (big word) if the radius of the rubber is the same i can measure the gap to the arch to estimate how much of a drop i want, cos they don't half sit high these late registration 16v. my early 8v looks a lot better allthough it doesn't handle as well.

mines dropped 40mm n 205-40-17's and ride quality is certainly harsher but it looks great and handles even better, however i have had to angle grind some of the plastic trim form under the arches to stop rubbing!!!!
