Buying Advice - Polo
« on: 11 May 2004, 07:36 »
I know this is a Golf forum, but I'm aware that everyone on here is generally a fan of anything Vdub! I'm looking for a P/R Reg Polo 1.4 CL or better spec (a 16v would be good but don't think her budget will stretch) for my other half at the moment, any body know what I should be looking out for when buying one apart from the usual stuff, are there any common problems or things to avoid on these cars?

All advice gratefully received

Cheers

I had a p-reg 1.0 polo once, and there was a horrible sound whenever it was running cold. VW admitted that this was a problem, and they didnt know the cure. So avoid the 1.0!!!

Also, there was a recall on the brakes for that period, make sure that if its been recalled, the work has been done.

Apparently the 1.4 is the best one in that range, so i reckon if it looks good, drives good and aint been crashed, anything goes :)

i had a '96 (N) 1.4.. the only probs i had with it within 2 years were..

1.. the powersteering pump was dodgy when i bought it...

2.. the central locking pump is notorious for going.. it had been replaced just before i bought my car and i had to replace it about 1 1/2 years in..

i had the "open air" model too, the one with the full length convertible roof thing.

was a great lil car :)

Used to have a '97 MK3 16v GTI 3dr in 'Black Magic'... now have a '55 Civic Type-S...

Cheers for the info guys, much appreciated, anyone else got any useful hints or tips, are they prone to rusting at all or anything like that? How often should the cam belt be changed on them?

Cheers!
