About to buy a V5, any advice?
« on: 05 September 2006, 22:15 »
Hi

Just looking for some advice. Im just about to buy an 03 V5 automatic. Getting rid of my 05 Focus which Ive only had 5 months because its so slow and sluggish its driving me mad.  Im goin for a V5 over a GTI because I want an automatic, and it seems GTI automatics are very hard to come by (can you even get them?).

Anyway, just wondering are there any known issues/problems to look out for? Or is there any reason I should steer clear of the V5? Ive heard theyre not that popular.

Cheers
Ben

Get the later model, it is 170bhp, the early one is only 150bhp. I'm not sure which year they changed.
I think the early engine is 10 valve, the latter is 20v.

If you're buying Mark 4  V5, go for a later one as advised. I spent a long time checking out Mk 4's -  My Technician advised that the early ones had some engine hassles -  he wasn't that keen on them, when I looked at a few clean examples in the £6500 bracket in the Spring, yep  - and anyway - he said the early ones were whipped by the 1.8 turbo's,  the petrol turbo's were better on juice consumption in town as well, and had more clout.

I have not tried the 6 speed turbo or V5 though !

Ok thanks for that, yeah its the 170bhp model. I would definately go for a GTI, but like I said, Im really looking for an automatic and it seems automatic GTI's are very hard to come by.

Had a Manual V5 170 bhp manual on a 51 plate the only caution I would say is to try and find out if the twin engine fans have been changed, if they are original fit then one will blow a fuse, overload the other.....another blown fuse and then you overheat!! £400 to replace the fans (15p for the fuse). VAG will replace if in warranty but scant hope of that with older cars.

You might also want to check that it's a UK vehicle, there are a number of vehicles from Europe that aren't registered with VAG UK and their value is less, I have heard that the V5 is prone to this as it was quite rare over here but a quick ring to VAG with the VIN number will tell you one way or the other (I didn't call them before you ask and yes my V5 was from Europe...... another lesson in life!!!)

I might have had a Friday car but in the two years I had it it was roadside recovered twice, over heated once and had engine sensors fail twice (£100 a pop) on the up side it had a good willing engine plenty of speed, nice interior and a good ride (for longer journeys) and for the record I have a friend with one who has had no trouble whatsoever so they can't be all bad!!

Hope this helps even though it's on the Neg side!!
The car in front is a Toyota............but only whilst I change down a gear!!
