polishing engine parts
« on: 03 September 2006, 16:54 »
Hi

Im interested in polishing some engine parts such as rocker cover, alternator etc on my mk2 my question is are the kits you can buy do a decent job at home or is it definately worth sending them off to a specialist.

If the kits work i dont mind doin it at home even if it takes a while if it saves me a fortune if they are ok can someone point me in the right direction for the materials i need

cheers

I don't know if a kit as such exists, but it is just a question of using different grades of sandpaper until you achieve a smooth finish.

You start off with a heavy grit such as a 100 and then work your way to a 600, using successively different grades.

eg, 100, 150, 180, 240, 320,400 and 600

Once you get to 240 grade its best to use it wet.

The aim is to replace each succesive scratch with a finer scratch. You should also try and alternate sanding directions between grits. (You could try using a different hand).

After 600grit you can polish with an aluminium polish.

PS- I'd only recommend doing this with the parts removed from the car.

It also takes time to do it properly, you might find yourself polishing for hrs. Or you could just take the parts to a metal polisers, they use a machine and it takes them minutes.
