GEAR SELECTOR PROBS

Had this for ages now,when changing gears it takes a bit of force and 'clunks' -this is not the gear box or clutch as they have just been replaced.Also the ball under the gear stick and the linkage rubbers are also new.Is there a special way of setting the linkage up?
