Golf Gti 8V Fuel Tank

I've got an 8V Golf Gti (1987), I've was told last week that I've got a cracked fuel tank. I managed to get a second hand tank but when the mechanic took the old one out to fit the new one in, he found all the bolts and straps holding it in too rusty!

The old fuel tank has been patched up and put back in place, but the mechanic says it's not a long term fix & if he were to put the new tank in it would take too long & cost too much.

As it stands I'm going to have to let my 7 year owned Gti go to Golf heaven unless I can sort it soon.

Any ideas on what to do?

the tanks are plastic! get some straps from the scrappy or somewhere cant think they will be expensive! try fitting it yourself, work in a well ventilated area and read a haynes manual or similar, if the bolts are to rusty i would get a load from a scrappy, i think the tanks and straps are the same on all the golfs as far as im aware (not sure for certain tho), if the threads are gone but a tap and die set and redo them yourself, dont scrap it tho

Do you have to drop the rear beam to remove the tank? The only petrol tank I have done on a VW was the one in my 82 Rabbit years back. I had to drop the rear beam for that one.
