Ok..Im no mechanic!
« on: 19 July 2006, 00:47 »
So, i didnt get the manual when i got my first 'proper' mk1.  anyway, im not proud!
I must ask..
I have a temperature gauge on my centre console..What is the temp of? oil? I also have an internal light over the passenger door only, which doesnt come on when i open the drivers door. Should it? (there is a door switch for something.)
The car is straight, what 0-60 should i be looking for, and expected top speed? (1981 1.6GTI)

All help muchly appreciated! ta all!

yep the gauge you speak of is oil temp. if its the same as in my mates mark 1 anyway.

the interior light switch should be able to be switched into 3 positions (the little black switch to the right of the lense), the furthest away from you should be where it comes on when the drivers door is opened, middle where it doesnt come off at all and towards you it should come on instantly. just make sure that its in the right position. If its not that then check the bulb.

The temperature gauge in the centre of your console is for engine temperature i.e. oil in your engine. Don't be too concerned it the needle sits at about halfway on the gauge face, this is quite normal running for a Mk1.

If after playing with the position switch on your internal light you still can't get it to come on when you open both doors - take a look at the door switches, it might just be a case that these have developed a fault or a break in the wiring. Which is a fairly easy fix.
