Mk1 GTi cold start problem?
« on: 26 June 2006, 23:56 »
Hi, I have own my Mk1 for about 13 years now, but about 8 years ago I fitted a 1.8 lump from a GTI Convertible, I believe to be 1992 year.
The most obvious difference was it was not oil air cooled and seemed to have a slightly different set up on the manifold, by this I mean we blanked off a inlet that we didnt have a pipe to go to..... Please bear with me as this was years ago and I have not really used the car for the last 6 years or so.
Anyhow since the moment we first cranked over the engine it never did fire from cold.
I have changed all the obvious things i.e cold start, injectors, 5th injector even new filler neck and tank incase of fuel contamination.
Its just that over the years I have put up with this, as all is needed is to start it 3-5 times and eventually it warms enough to drive, but it must be something simple to fix as it started when the engine was 1st installed.
I have always wanted to take the car to say TSR and get them to check it over but never wanted to drive it that far, as its not my 1st car anymore, and hasnt been for years.

So is there anyone nr heathrow/Sunbury that would like to have a look and see if they can sort out my old faithfull....... I would be prepared to pay the winning fixer :lipsrsealed:

Cheers

Darren

With my limited mechanical knowledge I must say this to every fuel problem that anyone has with a mk1 GTI engine, but could it be the fuel relay ? I've had problems with that, more warm starts than cold starts to be honest but might be something else to check. I know this is not a hard and fast rule but when you turn the key on can you hear the fuel pump prime ? Some you can't hear by the way so it may not be applicable to you.

My geography is not brilliant but admin user richandhazel is down south somewhere and may be willing to help you out at a price !  :lipsrsealed: Send him a PM but you need 10 posts first.

Cheers for your reply.
It has had a new fuel pump fitted and im sure a new relay fitted once, but the problem is still there.
What i might ask you is if you could send me a high quality picture of your engine near the spark plugs and showing the air intake as I would like to compare against mine and highlight this pipe I blanked off?

Would that be possible.

Also a picture of my car.... IT NO LONGER HAS THE sh!tE BONNET SCOOPS!!!

Car looks sweet, obviously I'm using artistic licence to imagine it without the bonnet scoops. I also like the peppermint grille, it stands out really well.

I'll see what I can do about a pic, but be warned I'm fairly slack with the old pics. I guess I could take a couple on my phone and send you that.
