Dump Valve + MK1 Golf
« on: 07 July 2006, 11:46 »
I the proud owner of a great black Mk1 Golf GTi with a G60 turbo charged engine.

However it has a very loud dump valve on it which I find very embrassing.  I'm not very mechanically minded but I'm aware that the dump valve serves an essential purpose.

On a lot of the WRC Rally cars the turbo's make a 'chattering' noise rather than the dump valve 'wosh'.  Anyone know what this is?

Anyone got any suugestions, or done something simular?

it's a mechanical blitz valve that doesn't run off vacume pressure. it's part of the anti-lag feature that keeps the turbo spinning when you're off the gas. it also kills the turbo after the stage so they have to rebuild it.

Ah, a rebuild... not good.

someone suggested replacing the present version with a recirculating piston type, as this will
virtually eliminate any dump valve noise.

anyone tried this?

that's what I run on mine, but it's still loud enough to scare people that are walking. You could try a standard VAG one that come on mk4's if you wanted. I have my previous one which gave a chatter on my engine if you wanted to try it?

Some dvs make different sounds so the make might point to the sound. HKS ssqv makes a hight pitched squeak, others the whooooosh. These are all vta(vent to atmosphere) dvs. To silence it you could fit a re-circ dv. The chatter sound is most probably the wastegate...do you have an induction Kit fitted as these can amplify the sound of the wastegate.

VTA.......old hot air expelled, new cold air into the system...cold air+more fuel=slight lag but more power.

Re-circ......hot air re-used with cold air drawn into the system...turbo keeps spooling=less lag but hotter air+less fuel=less lag..less power.

I may of course be talking utter bollox...but this is what I picked up with modifying turbo'd cars.

Antilag is the work of the Devil.......or people who like to rebuild turbos .....drop the antilag....it's all about launch controll

if you connect 1 end of the recirc valve to the cold side of the intercooler it puts cooler air back into the system :smug:

The dump valve I have fitted is a Forge version (blue in colour) Also have induction kit fitted.
