Bosch dizzy
« on: 21 December 2003, 15:20 »
Hi people,

I'm after some help with my golf mk1 (1093cc). The problem being the dizzy leaks oil along the shaft, so I was wondering a) is there an internal oil seal? b) if so how do you gain access and c) does anybody know of a repair kit for them?

Its a Bosch dizzy.

cheers,

Merry crimbo.

Two options here, strip your 20 year old distributor and replace the seal, or go to the scrapys and get yourself a dizzy, wiring, coil and ign amp out of a Polo and have a better setup. Sounds like a lot of work, but it's not that hard and the reward would be worth it.
ps, I assume the leak is internal and not from the body to head "o" ring .

I was just going to go along with the first option and that was to change the internal seal. Do you or anybody know how to gain access to the internal seal.? The current dizzy has been made upfrom 2 crap ones into this one, which has started to leak.

do you know if you can purchase a repair kit for the dizzy?

The second option might be worth thinking about in the new year! (Don't fancy walking around scrap yards in this weather!  ;D) So if I was to take bits off a Polo what year/reg can I take bits off. Surely I would be only able to take bits off a polo that is the same age..? Or same engine. Are must polo/jetta/golf dizzy upto 1982 the same?

Yeah i have changed the seal between the head and dizzy.  :(

cheers,

Mike.

Hi Mike, the dizzy can be off a later polo, up to around '93 I think, and you will gain electronic ignition  :). To strip your distributor, remove the screws that hold the vacuum unit, unhook and remove, remove the screws in the side of the dist and lift out the plate that the points are fitted to. Where the drive is there is a pin, knock the pin out and the drive comes off, pull the shaft through the dist body (there may be some shims to watch out for) and you will see the seal, remove the seal and if your lucky , it will have a #no on it. If not, take the seal, shaft and dist body to your local bearing and seal specialist and he should be able to help you out. This is for a Bosch dist, magneti marrelli are similar.

Oops, forgot to say, check the engine breather is clear as these engines were bad for choking them ;).

Electronic ignition... ah yes, that would be a MUCH better setup, a new job for the New Year. So all I would need is dizzy, coil, wiring and ign amp (which is what..?)

From your description it sounds like I was/am taking the dizzy apart correctly, just couldn?t remove the pin that goes through the shaft and drive plate. Sorry to keep asking question but do you know if the pin is tapered?

Cheers
Mike.

No, just tight. Use a punch that is good quality and a correct fit. Rest the drive on the top of a open vice and drive the pin through.
