gearbox help please!
« on: 05 June 2006, 21:44 »
i recently bought my mk3 golf GTi 16v 150k miles now had it a few weeks and covered some miles too, 3rd was sometimes a bit iffy to get into but i soon got used to how it felt, no crunching just could feel it didn't quite  locate.
I steamed cleaned the Engine etc, now ever since while driving occasionally it will NOT go into 3rd or 4th for a moment then it will go in.

i've had a little play with adjusting the linkage (cable) i've bleed the clutch covered the linfake in grease and under the boot and yet still often at the worst possible time it wont go into gear, once in gear its fine, no noises doesn't jump out, no crunching or whining etc which suggests to me linkage but i'm at a loss.

Is this common signs of gearbox failure on a golf?

many thanks in advance!

mike

the cable should only be adjusted by VAG . Take it into them .

Your problem sounds exactly like mine, only I had issues with second. I'll offer these bits of advice:

1. It's more than likely the selector buggered, probably broken up inside the box and bits of it occasionally (permanently in the end in my case) block a gear or two

2. Replace the box, it's got to come out anyway really and having done 150k may as well

3. Don't use a corrado box, they don't fit! Nor a VR6 box. Code you're looking for is CDA I think.

4. In all I spent £600 fitting a rebuilt gearbox, but that was higher than it should have been as I tried the said corrado box first. Oops!

problem solved!

well after all the above i figured right change the oil, the old oil was like water in terms of viscosity!

so out with that refill with new semi synthetic and been fine ever since!

thanks for the advice
