The infamous tornado red!!!!
« on: 05 June 2006, 20:29 »
Hi all

I just have a quick question and if anyone can give me advice i would be well pleased. Story is i bought my tornado red golf and due to the previous owner not washing or polishing it, the colour faded to tornado pink

So i washed it and then cut it with rubbing compound and have now put on about 8 coats of autoglym super resin, But i am not happy with the finish.

I have been told that if i was to wash it again then give it a coat of polish and then apply some carnuba wax and then polish over the top that the shine and finish will be better. Is this true

Has anyone else got any advice on what i can do?

cheers in advance

Mines red and my mates gonna mop it over with some G3 compound to bring it back to the original red then I'll keep it topped up with Meguiars tech wax and hope for the best, even if you haven't got access to a propper mop I think it would be worth going over the car by hand with a propper compound before you polish it. It mite be worth going to a local paint mixer and supplier as they usually have all the stuff you'll need to get the paint back to a nice deep red and they mite even advise you on the best products and how to use them.

regardless of what you do to it, it will fade over and over, it's due to the paint.  I am going to get mine re-sprayed as it needs it.

Best advice, cut it about 4-5 times, then polish is about 6-7 times then wax it 3-4 times, and do that once a week. Other than that, get it re-sprayed.

Cant agree with you there slick as I've seen the results after a car has been mopped over with G3 compound and then given a really good polish and wax and the finish is still as good as when it was done about 2 years ago. The most important aspect is what you do to the paint after its been cut back with compound, if you just use a cheap polish then it will fade but if the paint is polished and waxed with good quality products that are designed to be used together and it is done properly then in my experience the finish does last.

If the paintwork is good apart from the fading you could consider getting the whole car blown over with 2 pack lacquer.

it will still fade though unless you top up with polish each weekend. Especially in summer, and after rainfall, and it turns sunny. Water flashes off and takes colour with it.

I have used loads of cleaning products and am currently sticking with Autoglym (on an average mans wage this is still pricey) if you can get it mopped and afford to keep getting it done and topped up, then fair enough. If not you will have a struggle unless it is kept out of sunlight.
