Frodo says that VW have just changed their opinion:

GOLF mkIV is now recommended to make the change at 4 years or 60k miles.  Sounds like a sensible recommendation and Update to that generic Service Book schedule.

At last they are now agreeing with Technicians that I have consulted. Manufacturers generally imply term maintenance costs at the minimum, in order to attract the attention of Lease / maintenance companies, selling a total package to Fleets and the like.

If you OWN the car yourself , and you have a sporting driving style, it is different:-

For the Turbo cars, go with the 1st change a little earlier and before 50k or 4 years. If you suspect real heavy driving from a previous owner, or find maintenance to be poor - discs worn out early, tyres all worn at edges, black oil etcetera - Have it changed at 40k miles or so.

Believe me. You won't be sorry , and you can drive harder with more confidence.

Just had the 1st cam belt change at 78K miles.
I just bought the car and the previous owner had not had it done. I'm sure my service book says get it done at 80K.
