I have the answer to my BHP question.
In the original delivery note from VW, it is stated as 115bhp. The sticker inside the service book says 85kw - so, if you have an 85kw Golf, this is the 115bhp model, and should have the red D and I.
You're right the Alfa isn't built to last, I am so pleased with my new golf, particularly the interior which is just a pleasure to sit in. The Alfa did have better roadholding on the back roads, but the Golf beats it in every other respect, even though it is a diesel.
