Is it worth changing
« on: 16 December 2003, 12:39 »
I currently have a MK II 8V ( 1989 ) which is a great car and although it's done 172k still runs great with few problems. A guy at work is flogging a mint MKIII 2.0 gti 8v. Is it worth changing to this - is it a better, more refined car than the MK II?

I've been in a couple of mk3 GTI's & I haven't really been impressed with their acceleration, they may be built better than a mk2 ??? but in my opinion I think they're the least desirable of the Golf GTI's (no offence mk3 owners)!

My bro has a mark 3 and I have a mark 2, I left him the other day and my car only cost me ?500 compared to his ?6000. Says it all really.

As they say above, depends what you want from your car. Mark 3 has better interior and more modern etc but has put on weight so is quite slow !!!

Put it this way ive got a mk3 gti 8v and im selling purely because its not fast enough something like 10.3 secs to 60 doesnt really impress does it!!!!!

Im after a mk2 16v as they do go !!!!

saying all this though the mk3 is better built reliable and is very refined and comfortable. I remember doing a 4 hour round trip and getting out thinking damn my back doesnt hurt.... so end of the day if you want refinement buy a mk3 if you want something that goes buy another mk2 or save for either the mk3 16v or vr6 as the 8v INMO shouldnt have a gti badge!!!!
