Which golf?

Hi
I am looking to buy my first golf either 8v or 16v and i am hoping you can answer a few questions that i have.

Which engine is the most reliable and capable of doing the most miles before it needs replacing, 8v or 16v?
Is there a big difference in fuel consumption between them?

Basically iam looking for a reliable golf that will last me the next 3 years, black, 3dr, big bumper model, if you know of one for sale please let me know.

The old 8v VS 16v is one of the longest running debates in history, just have a trawl through this board and you'll find plenty of posts arguing in depth which one is best.
The best piece of advice is drive both a decide which one is best for you.
Both are capable of high mileage if maintained correctly and either could easily see 200k miles without major troubles. It's usually the top end that gets tired first with valve stem seals being the most common thing to wear out.
Expect about 32mpg on average from a 16v and about 36mpg from an 8v.

I've owned both and personally I prefer the 16v, right I'm off......................fast!!!
