Engine change time

Hi, just wondering if it is at all possible to change the engine/gearbox on a mk2 gti without the use of an engine hoist? Got an engine to fit into the car but half of the other engine and gearbox remain in situ.

Have asked the same question myself.  You can completely dismantle the front end (just unbolts) and wheel the engine out on a trolly jack if you want, but a hoist does make it all the easier.  If in doubt hire a hoist for the weekend.....

Thanks for that info, I was pretty sure about unbolting the front end but wasnt sure if I could actually get the engine out through the front, I will give it a go though as I need it doing ASAP and cant seem to get a hoist sorted out quick enough,

only thing to watch when bringing engine out of the front is that your struts don't catch the wings(if you leave the struts etc bolted to the subframe). other way is to unbolt driveshafts from the gearbox and the steering rack from the subframe and leave it in situ then you don't have to dismantle any suspension. we usually pull the whole lot to be honest but there again most of the vw's that we take engines out of are being broken anyway! we have a trolley that we "found" at the back of sainsburys that is just the right size to lower the front subframe onto,supprt the shell on stands and wheel it out. believe it used to be used for deliveries to the bakery,well it ain't now.
