Its using a clay bar to get rid of all the crap the paintwork picks up over the years like tar, tree sap, etc etc.  It leaves the paint feeling as smooth as a fook. You then polish the car to leave a glass like finish.  I bought a Meguiar's quick clay detailing system kit from ebay which was spot on. The car shines like fook after using this.

paint cleaner is for the stuff the clay can't remove, the stuff in the paint as it were. It also helps remove oxidisation and fading :)

nosaj26 - once you've put the front on axle stands & taken the wheels off, its about an hour to clean the old calipers up with a wire brush and brake cleaner, then 10 mins to mask them up, then i did three coats, each took 10 mins and you have to wait for them to dry somewhat between coats for 30 mins. The paint said to leave it for 24 hours, but i thought it was still a bit tacky to the touch so i left it for 48 hours, then it was nicely dry.

Dom - oh right, i've not seen it. is is a mild cutting compound? who makes it?

PassRatGT - HA yeah - makes me think of hot dogs !
how long has the hammerite lasted so far? i was very tempted to go for the hammerite option but thought the cali paint might last longer...who knows...

TIMMY - not sure about blue, would have to see it. why not photoshop up a pic of what it'd look like??
