Wheel size Query / Induction query...
« on: 26 January 2003, 21:45 »
Hi

Could anyone assist me on a tyre size query
I currently have mk2 89 gti 8v with 14inch steel wheels
195 60 r14

for insurance reasons i cant afford to upgrade to alloys so want to change to a better quality tyre than the badly balding ones on mine , what is the biggest but safest size tyre i could fit on there that could be both wide or low profile???

also my car i just purhased has a K&n Panel filter in , how much more BHP gain would i get if any upgrading to a full induction kit???

Cheers very muchly

Ste

Hi,

Your best bet would be a set of 15" mk2 alloys with 195/50/15's. If you get the usual VW cross spokes that were fitted at that time, how would the insurance company ever know they weren't standard fit anyway? :)

For reference the usual tyre sizes used on a mk2, in case you want to go mad are:

195/50/15
205/45/16 or 195/45/16
205/40/17

Just moving to 15's you will notice the car handles better  :)

A performance filter by itself, even an induction kit is never going to manage more than a couple of bhp. It is even possible to lose performance as various magazine tests have shown! They generally have more impact when combined with a full exhaust, chip change and proper rolling road setup.

Cheers,

jv

15inch Passat steels are about 25 quid each new from your local VW dealer and they have the correct offset for your Golf, you can fit 195 -50-15 tyres and they look smart, aswell as keeping insurance costs down.
