Changing a Starter Motor
« on: 10 November 2003, 11:50 »
I have a MK 4 Golf - and the starter motor is making a terrible noise when starting the engine (cold or hot).

Has anyone had the same problem? If so how did you manage to fix the problem.

Is it easy to change the motor to a new one yourself???

I think you mean the bush inside the gearbox that the starter shaft pushes into. This usually only makes a noise when cold if its not in straight or damaged. Maybe difficult to replace yourself if you haven't got anything to prise it out with.
My money is on a problem with the motor itself. The way to check if its the bush is remove the starter, put grease on the end of the shaft, refit, see if the noise disappears, if it does then probably the bush.

Try doing as i suggested, take the motor out and grease the end of the shaft.

Mine made a horrible growling noise when started up from cold, the start motor was still catching the flywheel. I changed the motor and it made no difference, checked the bush in the gearbox and it was in square. The grease trick does work for a while.
