Running like a nova lol
« on: 21 April 2006, 09:37 »
How can i tell whats wrong?

Driving to work today and the car was lacking power   , when changing up a gear it felt like the engine was breaking (not sure what technical term to use, basically when u change down gear to early and the engine slows the car) but then the power cam back a bit, but when taking my foot of the accelerator it did it again.

When i got to the car park at work and slowed down the car would not pull forward as normal, then when stopping the car would pull of at all. I had to rev the engine high to move.

The car has problems starting when wet, but started fine this morning, currently the petrol is low but it has been lower before with no problem, and when checking the car started fine at work so dont think its a fuel problem.  I have checked and the petrol filter has petrol in, i have checked the oil and that is fine.

Does it sound like the car is mis-firing? and how can i tell? When i get a chance what should i check? plugs, dizzy cap.  or does it sound simple like low fuel?

Cheers in advance.

Id say its most likely to be an issue with the carb. Im no carb expert though. Be patient and somebody will give you some ideas.

There is a rubber flange/gasket between the carb and the inlet manifold. It sounds like this has split and you have a large air leak into the inlet manifold. When you rev the engine it sucks the leak in the rubber closed so you get some power but on low revs the air rushes in and makes the mixture so weak its like you've run out of petrol. Check also the short 12mm vac pipe coming off the RH end of the inlet manifold to the brake servo etc. If this is badly split (and it usually happens on the underside where you cant see it) then the effect can be very similar. Hope this helps

if it is that and you want to replace it dont get an after market one because they fall apart in about two weeks, the only decent ones are vw ones, even tho theyre like 45 quid
