problem after drop
« on: 19 April 2006, 12:14 »
just had some 35mm lowering springs put on the mk3 8v.
still got standard shocks on for now.
noticed that the car gets pulled around a bit by bumpy surfaces and also when caornering feels very tight to road but skips over any bumps.
Now this i would kinda expect, but when the car is stationery, the front wheel have a problem (i think)
When the steering wheel is pointing straight, one wheel is dead on straight forward, the other (passenger side) looks like it is ever so slightly turning to the left?! (what can cause this?) dunno whether its the lowering which has caused this or a coincidence (as i heard a bit of a rotational grinding noise from that side of the car last week)

can anyone advise please?

You should always have the tracking and wheel alignment checked/adjusted when altering the ride height.

Just phone around your local tyre fitters to find out.  Most have the technology now.

Just called kwik fit, their response was, and i quote: "We are not touching it, take it back to where you had it done and get them to look at it" . Called their cust service dept to confirm, I was told that if the car and/or suspension isnt standard they wont touch it. Has anyone esle had this from them? I am a bit shocked on that score, especially considering there are 2 mk3 GTIs outside their shop owned by their fitters. You cant get kwiker hey?!

What a load of rot.  My local tyre fitters did the tracking and alignment on my mk1....which was far from standard.  Forget Kwik Fit - phone someone else enquiring whether they have tracking/alignment technology and don't even tell them about the suspension modification.

Thats just your tracking. Like A7 says, forget Quikfit there's loads of places that will do it. My local place only charges £10+vat for tracking. But if you've dropped it 35mm you'll want the camber done too which is probably another £30-40.

wicked! I love you guys!

is it the camber thing when you see cars when it looks like their wheels are bending in or out? my front ones look as if the top of them are further away from the car than the bottom, kinda like this but only by  few mm:
