8Valve Digifant Teething problems......HELP
« on: 19 April 2006, 02:40 »
Hello there

I have just purchased an 8 valve to tie me over until I get my valver back on the road but am having a few problems.

I noticed that the MFA was reading out that the Oil Temp was 133 degrees at one point, then the oil pressure light came on randommly along with that dreadful buzzer. Is this related? does that buzzer/light come one when it gets too hot?

The fan kicks in and the water temp needle stays where it should be, but haven't actually checked if there is any water in to be honest!, so was thinking that this might be the problem.  If there isnt any water to cool the block/oil down then it is going to get really hot isnt it? or is it? Help me i am a Digifant novice!

cheers in advance!

oh... it has done 148k if that helps

Oil temp is way too high! = thin oil = low pressure =buzzer. If water temp is OK then oil cooler and probably oil filter may be clogged.
Suggest as a first you drain oil & use some flushing oil then refill with cheap 15/40 and new filter. Use cheap oil at first because if the problem is bigger you may have to drain it all out again to sort other things. If filter/cooler is clogged the oil pump pick up probably will be as well. If the problem is sorted by the oil flush & change then so long as you don't run the cheap oil for more than 3000mls you won't do any harm - Good luck!

cheers mate

I will give it a mini service this weekend I think. So you reckon that becuase the oil maybe ready for a change, i.e has been in there for a while it has lost thickness tht the buzzer came on?...makes sense.

I topped up the water and drove it in to town and in some traffic and only got to 98, but the water temp doesnt get over a quarter! odd! but the fan kicked in at this point as I opened the bonnet and waited till the fan came on.

The XS oil temperature makes it very thin, it may be as much to blame as the oil just being old. If the flush and oil change doesn't bring the oil temp down (and it shouldn't go above 120) then the heat exchanger in the oil cooler may be furred up on the water side. See how it goes, the next step may be to flush out and descale the cooling system. The oil should'nt get too much hotter than the coolant, if it does it means that heat is not being 'exchanged' between the two which is the function of the oil cooler. Also if the oilways & filter are clogged you can have quite good pressure but a very slow oil flow rate, the slower it flows the hotter it gets. Try all the possible 'cheap' fixes first
