Power steering in the rain

Does anyone have an idea on how to protect the power steering belt from rain (water)??
As its starting to become really annoying. All this powered to non-powered then back to powered steering again is, shall we say, slightly dangerous. Nearly had me in a ditch yesterday

Can anyone 'steer' me in the right direction?

I had the same problem with the power steering pump slipping. I solved this problem with a new belt and was fine for all last winter.

Now that the rain has come again the belt is slipping but seems to be tight. A new belt from VW might be in order.

The belt should only slip if it is not tight enough, or if the belt or pulley gets contaminated with oil/grease.

This happened to me last weekend - when the rain was REALLY heavy.  Never happened before though.  Also happened to my best mate on the same day (he drives a Fiat Coupe = constant problems!!).  Now we know what it is!

There should be a plastick panell fixed to the inner wheel arch to stop water thrown up by the wheel going onto the pulley. This often falls off as the clips rot away. If you turn the steering onto full lock and can see the pulleys at the bottom of the engine, the cover is missing.
