1.8 GTI T : Noise when changing gear
« on: 13 March 2003, 09:04 »
Hi, having a little problem with my 2000 (V) GTI Turbo, its seems to be making a noise (similar to that of pressure being let off) when changing gear.

I understand that this may be the dump valve, but not sure if I should be hearing it.... any ideas ?

Cheers

Dave

A dump valve is not standard fit but if you haven't had the car from new then it is possible someone has fitted one.

The noise you describe is exactly that a dump valve would make. Take a look under the bonnet to investigate further.

Cheers,

what jv says is correct.  Also one other thing is has it made that noise all of the time you have had it or is a recent thing?

I thought GTI Turbo's were fitted with the re-circulating dump valve ? I f not then I am not sure what it is.

Basically when changing up through the gears I hear a sound somewhat like pressure being released. My friend had the same model and noticed the same thing but never did anything about it.

Could this be "fitted as standard" ? I have only owned the car for a week and am taking it in to VW on Tuesday (?58 an hour) to get things looked at, in the hope I can get it done under warranty.

Any more thoughts ?

Cheers

Monkey.

Its very interesting that you should bring this up because I get that same nioce in my GTI 1.8T, I actually thought it was normal, not ever owning a car with a turbo before, so I would be interested to hear what VW have to say,
By the way does any one know how to make the turbo whistle louder?

Your lucky, my golf had to have  a new gearbox after only 8000 miles, nightmare. the whistling sound is normal.

Have you tried using the clutch when changing gear. You'll not get a noise then!!!

 ;) ;) ;)

if it's a kind of fluttering noise when you lift off the throttle, then it is likely to be a knackered boost valve - this is like a wideboy dump valve but more efficient as it vents back into the intake system rather than to atmosphere.

The standard Bosch valve is a round black plastic capsule with two larger and one small rubber hose connected to it, mounted at the rear RHS of the engine just underneath the engine cover. It does not usually last very long but it can be easily replaced by a home DIYer - cost only approx ?15 from the dealer (make sure you get some new 'jubilee' type hose clips at the same time!). The same valve is used on all VAG 1.8 turbo models, and they should supply you with the latest version which may last slightly better than your old one. Alternatively you could consider an aftermarket recirculating valve such as Forge etc but you will be looking at a cost of around ?100, plus needing regular overhaul.

Well I replaced my diverter valve/dump valve/boost valve whatever you like to call it, I got my golf about a month ago and it's fluttered since I got it, part cost £21 from VW (parts guy called it a dump valve, didn't know what a diverter valve was)
Took me 5 mins to take the old one off (VW clamps are a bit of a bugger to remove, careful not to damage the hoses)
and took 5 mins to put on the new diverter with new jubilie clamps on.

My car no longer flutters and is completely silent on gear changes, thing is, I kind of liked the flutter, oh well :(

get an intake kit and an uprated turbo inlet pipe to get some noise back from it... and good job at reopening a 3 year old post
