Heat Sheild required or not?
« on: 03 April 2006, 09:39 »
Hi guys,

Partner has been told she needs the heat shield replaced on her MK3 95/96 GTI 8V.

German and swedish dont seem to stock and main dealers price is crazy.

Anyone had any experience of this and best place to get it.

Apparently it comes in 4 sections?

I had a mazda before which had its shield flapping about and rusted, I just took it all off and was no problems.

Kwik fit specialist ;) seems to think this is not an option on GTI, opinions lads :)

Cheers

they do come in 4 parts and they are needed I think, but its usually the clips that come off them. Some garages say that they need replacing because they dont wanna mess with the clips. I only know this as mine is in awesomegti as i type with the same issue

I haven't been able to have a look myself but I am told that its past the point of just replacing the clips.

If this is the case for sure, are the parts only available from VW and would it be safe just to take it off an ditch it.

Cheers

The heat shield near the down pipe on my 8v was rattling but I managed to crimp the metal to sort this. the heat shield on the cat had rusted around the bolts and some big jubilee clips cured this for a while  but in the end when i was having some tyres fitted the garage just took it off...now nice and quiet!! I have been told it isnt required but not to drive/park in long grass!!!

Heat shield under the CAT is not required.

The downpipe one is! But its a bugger to get at. Mine has been rattling for years now! Its interesting coz the revs that it vibrates at have changed over time!

I was told that its such a nasty job, dont bother with it unless you are doing major engine work or a complete exhaust system.

Just turn the tunes up!

I've had them start to rattle on my GTi and my VR.  Both times I've taken them to my local VW specialist and they've welded a couple of jubilee clips in place to hold it on - total cost £9!!  The GTi has done 55,000 rattle-free miles since having it done!
