Pooey coolant - soo annoying
« on: 01 April 2006, 20:38 »
OK, so i have flushed my coolant 4 times this weekend now (twice by blowing through to get some of it out of the block), but cant seem to get rid of the oily gook clogging it up.

It seems to have taken hold of the near-side of my radiator, (so causes the fan not to switch on because the thermostat is stone cold and overheat the engine) heater matrix (so the blowers are luke warm) and all the pipes are clogged like Pavarotti's arteries!

I have bridged the switch for the fan, and driving like that keeps the oil temp at 84-86 and the water temp just left of centre (cooler than its ever been) but this isn't ideal as i have to pop open the bonnet and pull out a wire, and I also think the water channels have a lining of this oil/water mix, too.

I have heard of 'reverse flushing' but don't know what is involved.

I am seriously considering getting a new heater matrix and radiator for it now, tho.

What should I do?

reverse flushing is when you put a hose or something into the bottom hose of the radiator or block and turning it on. its the same as normal flushing but from the bottom up lol

Drain the coolant and pop all the hoses you can get to and shove a hosepipe in every orifice and blast it with water

Then connect it all back up and fill with plain water, then drop a cup full of biological washing power in the header tank and run it for 20 mins.  Once its cooled down, drain, flush & repeat a few times, till the water is clean.  You can take some of the coolant pipes off and leave em to soak in warm water with some washing up liquid in, then give em a scrub to shift the built up oil deposits.

This may not rescue the heater matrix though :(

Oh and only do this once you have fixed the source of the oil leak into the coolant system, on my GTI the oil cooler went and dumped oil in my water

Give the washing powder a go first, and bin the bypass valves if fitted.  My heater still works brilliantly after I flushed out all the oil :)
