Water leak - heater motor!
« on: 21 March 2006, 13:02 »
I posted up a week or so ago about a water leak I was getting on my Mk2 GTi 8v, but I've cleaned the drain holes a bit and it still slightly leaks.  I think the water is getting through the air vent/heater motor under the scuttle panel and then the water is getting in to the air vents!  I washed the car on the weekend and had a bit leaking under the dash on the P/S and then when I switched the heaters on full blow it gently ran from somewhere in the centre of the dash!

Is it worth constructing some kind of shield to stop water getting in to the heater motor area in the first place?

Help, it rains too often in Cumbria to ignore this (plus I like washing my car!).

the leak will almost definitely be coming from under the seal of the heater, the best thing to do is to remove the plastic mesh cover under the scuttle (bonnet) then remove the clip, it just slides out with the aid of a screwdriver then smear silicon on the seal and refot job done. other thatn that it could be the windscreen. Where abouts in Cumbria are you based?
i must buy a new car!

on my mk2 i replaced the crap, flimsy scuttle panel with the 'later', thicker, better scuttle panel. with my old scuttle, i cut a section out about the size of the vent under the scuttle and siliconed it to the top to act as a kind of umbrella! then replaced the scuttle panel and tested it. works a treat, noone sees it, so thats all that matters!

Thanks guys, its really pi$$ing me off, probably the only thing letting me down on the Golf at the moment!

I'll have a play with the bonnet vent deflector things and the heater motor and see if I can seal things a bit better.  Germans letting the side down on the design, tut tut!

Mint cake, horrible stuff!  Its like eating a bar of sugar!

Dent lemonade, thats the stuff us West Cumbrians produce.  I'm not sure if the colour has something to do with Sellafield or not tho...
