Some MK2s may not have the cossover pipe on the matrix hoses, some may never have had the recal and others may have had them removed at a later date.  Either way, its not essential that they are there.

First thing I would do is replace the header tank cap, and check the antifreeze mixture.

P.S how do you know the waterpump is working ok, the impeller could be slipping at high revs?

or pieces of it could have broken off i have seen that with both water pumps and oil pumps
